On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex issued the following statement:

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”

My first thought was So Many Questions! And I found so many answers at their website, SussexRoyal.com, which outlines in depth their plans and new lifestyle, including how it will be funded.

But mostly: I KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP! By her clothing, obviously. Meghan’s all-tan outfit on the visit to Canada House in London yesterday brought to mind the tan Banana Republic trench dress she wore during the tour of South Africa (see below). That appearance was just before they made a major announcement condemning their treatment in the media. Yesterday’s look feels so prescient now, worn the the day before their new history-making new path was announced. It’s the ultimate dressing-for-the-slideshow moment.

What are your thoughts on Harry and Meghan’s announcement? Please share in the comments.

UPDATE @ 12:25pm: Royal reporters are citing sources suggesting that the Sussexes did this on their own, without involvement from the Queen, Prince Charles, or Prince William. A tweet from Jonny Dymond, the BBC’s royal reporter: “BREAKING. BBC Understands that no other member of the Royal Family was consulted before Harry and Meghan issued their personal statement tonight, the Palace is understood to be ‘disappointed’.”
